Brian Paddick has been chosen by the Liberal Democrats to represent them for the Mayoral election of May 1st, 2008. He then faces Ken Livingstone, the current left-wing Mayor (he may be Labour but he really is left-wing!), Boris Johnson, the Tory candidate (conservative, right-wing) and the ecologist Siân Berry. Medias focus on Livingstone and Johnson who are really high in polls (45% and 39% respectively) and it's going to be difficult for Paddick to make his voice heard but he's got many assets: he's a former cop (then representing security) who had introduced new approaches (not attacking drug users but drug dealers, so rather libertarian) and he's gay! I mean, it helps in big towns but usually only if the candidate is left-wing.
